I need help to make the switch.
Posted Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 3:35 PM

I have been an omnivore for 49 years and my body is showing it.I can do without meat, dairy, eggs, etc.But sugar is my weakness. I am hoping I can find someone whom I can talk to when I feel weak.

Hi, the best thing is to limit the pace of change to what you can handle. If you are learning to feed yourself without all the customary animal foods, that is enough for now. Concentrate on satisfying meals and snacks based on whole foods. Eat a variety of fruits, veggies, whole grains, potatoes, and beans. You can add a few nuts and seeds.

Don't try to do too much at once. It's ok to eat something sweet in small amounts right now. Avoid sweets made with any animal ingredients or transfats. That's a better choice for you right there. Over time you will perfect your diet more.

A couple things that have helped me remain committed (I quit eating meat 2 months ago) are watching the movie Food, Inc. (on DVD) and reading the book "Eating Animals". The primary reason I quit eating meat was to improve my health, but both of these have given me a lot of other reasons, some of which might be stronger than my original one!

Good luck!

I completely agree with Janice. Going vegan, especially if it feels easy to you, is a HUGE step, and enough for now. I think you'll find that you don't crave sugar as much once you do -- at least that seems to be the consensus among the long-time vegans I know -- but there's lots of sweet, yummy vegan stuff, so take it one step at a time would be my advice, especially when going vegan is such a HUGE positive step! Way to go!
