Beans in Soup
Posted Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 9:11 AM

I have a northern bean soup recipe. Yummy. The problem is well...gas. People have told me about "tricks" when you make beans to reduce gas. Cook then with vinegar or baking soda... rinse well.. So far I have not seen anything that works well.. except beneo. Is there a way to make bean soup that does not produce gas? Is there a real trick i don't know?

Here are a few tips:

1. If dried beans - soak the beans longer (a day in the fridge) and rinse a couple of times during soaking.
2. Add kombu, a type of seaweed, to your beans while cooking.
3. Use smaller beans such as lentils, mung, and adzuki.
4. Add a very small pinch of baking soda to your cooking beans. Not too much though as it destroys some of the nutrients.
5. We build up over time the ability to digest beans and other high fiber foods. So patience helps.

Absolutely! You can eat breakfast for dinner if you want. As long as you eat vegan and low-fat, you are good to go in any order.

Seaweed is usually in the Asian section of a grocery store. Sold in bags, non-perishable. It would most certainly be at a healthfood store. You could always order it on-line if you can't find it locally.

Couple more questions about the seaweed. What does it taste like? bitter? and For every cup of beans how much would I use?
Thanks for the responses. This is really one of the BEST features of this program; a big reason I have recommended it to friends & family.

Yuck. I probably shouldn't admit that I don't like to eat kombu, because it's really good for you!

I throw in a 2 x 2 inch square in my beans, probably about 2 cups of beans.

No it is good you admitt you don't like everything. Thanks for that. Now i know to either try it before throwing it in soup or to just put in a little. Imagine if i made a big batch of soup and hated it? Now that would be bad. Thanks.

Oh you can't taste it in the foods. It just sits there in a lump doing its job, breaking down enzymes that cause gas.

Then I throw the lump out. Others eat the lump. Your choice!
