hidden animal ingredients

I am a new Vegan and am having problems finding enough information on hidden animal products in food and other products. For instance, just found out I can't eat my Altoids any more. It's starting to feel a little overwhelming. I would love it if others could share with me other places I need to look out for hidden animal ingredients.

Buffy, I would suggest that for the 21 Days of the program, you just focus on the published menu, and eating whole foods. After you get some confidence in that area, then move on to the issues that are overwhelming you now. I'd hate to see you give up because of the overload of information.

agreed. focus on what you *can* eat. it's lots more fun and eventually you learn which of your usual choices you want to change.

one of the most amazing things about going vegan, for me, was how it opened me to becoming more mindful of activities that had previously been habit. some people think that sounds like a pain, but i was sort of shocked to realize how little attention i had paid to what i put in (and on) my body. when i went vegan, it started with ingredients, but that kind of mindfulness spreads into other areas of your life. after two years, i no longer eat or buy things thoughtlessly--and that's a real gift!

when you make a mistake, just remember that it's a process. Smile

Some time ago I came across a list of food ingredients that were animal based but didn't sound it. It would be nice to find that list again, but the truth is it's even better to stay away from processed foods with all the unpronounceable ingredients.

Thank you so much for the advice. I would specifically just like to know that the breads I'm eating are vegan. This is my second attempt at going vegan. I made it a little over a month before I collapsed last time. My biggest problem is my taste buds. I have not liked anything I've cooked from the meal plan resulting in a lot of wasted food. I'm sticking mostly to fresh food, but I know that won't last very long. If I could add some pasta and breads, that would help greatly. I did order three vegan cookbooks on line which is helping as well.

There is also a "cheat sheet" on one of the PETA sites. http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/ it's not a complete list of foods that are out there but it helps me sometimes when I am looking for a safe cereal or even frozen french fries, its nice to feel like you can still have some of the food you grew up with. Green Queen - That's the list I was talking about. Thanks for putting it back out there. I now have it bookmarked for easy reference.

Buffy,

Please don't give up because you feel overwhelmed. As others have already mentioned, focus on what you CAN eat. If you inadvertently eat something with a hidden animal ingredient, don't fret. It's all about intention. Just do the best you can. As you learn more and find a core group of recipes you enjoy and feel confident making, you will feel better about things.

I agree with MystkGrl3. I can't be militant about it.

I AM a vegan as far as possible and practical.
I avoid all animal products to the best of my ability. When I have complete control, no animal food passes my lips. However, my path is one of progress, not perfection.

Thanks, I actually adapted that from a post by a Team Member on SparkPeople.com. It was a bit longer and I shortened it to be almost like an affirmation. It keeps me sane !!

Thank you so much for all the information and support. I live in a small southern town where I was considered weird because I was vegetarian. Now as a vegan I'm REALLY weird, and the few people who know what vegan means only wants to tell me how unhealthy it is, including my Doctor! (I am overweight and have high blood pressure, so he of all people should be more supportive of my decision) I have no support except for this forum. Thank you all so much! I've already written down what you posted wild4stars. That will really help keep me motivated and doing my best.
