What about sodium?
Posted Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 1:48 PM

Is there a guideline as to how much sodium is too much? I am using a lot of canned beans and tomatoes and I know they are high in sodium. I rinse the beans well to reduce the sodium but there isn't much that can be done with tomatoes except try to find a low sodium brand.

Are there any guidelines about this? Any tips on how to reduce sodium in other products such as fat free, vegan dressings or prepared foods? I have eliminated many packaged and prepared foods completely, but the do still sneak in here and there.

Eliminating processed foods will certaily help. As for canned foods, I've been able to find almost all beans and tomato products packaged without sodium.

We don't address sodium too much in the Kickstart. However, if you have a history of high blood pressure, you want to be aware of sodium added to foods.

The standard recommendation is no more than 2300 mg per day for adults. Some say it should be no more than 1500 mg per day. It really depends on your health and what your physician has advised.
