Vegan Diet Books

I'm totally confused at the advice of many vegan authors. Is there one book that any of you can recommend that is the most resourceful and useful.

I have purchased so many and find there are varying degrees of what you can or should do in order to be a healthy vegan.

Most recipes in the books I own aside from the MacDougall Program are filled with fatty recipes. MacDougall's recipes are so bland - I need more flavor!!

I am definitely not losing weight eating anything I want as long as it's vegan. IE "Skinny Bitch" and "The Kind Diet".

I don't think vegan cookbooks are going to have much nutrition advice, as most cookbooks do not. But I would recommend any book by Dr. McDougall, Dr. Ornish, Dr. Barnard, Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Campbell, or Dr. Fuhrman. They all have the same general advice.

I agree with Susan on that. I have shelves FULL of vegetarian and vegan cookbooks. Many are not "healthy" or "low fat". So here is what I have done.

I read most of Dr. Barnard's books, Dr. McDougall's books, RAVE diet, The China Study. These gave me the "foundation" of knowledge I needed.

THEN, I went back to the rich in flavor but also in fat recipes and took what I learned and subbed out the eggs, fat, etc...Kept the seasonings. No reason things have to be too bland unless you like it.

I am suspicious that Dr. McDougall's recipes aren't lacking in flavor, but perhaps it is the lack of fat that you are craving. It is a tricky one to distinguish.

Best of luck!

You can also go to the library and see if you can find any of Susan Powter's old cookbooks for recipes. Her diet advice was also pretty good...and I understand she is now a vegan (and may have been one back in the day as well).

If you need more flavor, there's always such things as salsa, which has no fat or added sugar.

Oceandog,
That is really good advice! Thank you for posting it.

lots of good recipes in the Engine 2 Diet -- and it's by Dr. Esselstyn's kid. Low far vegan, mostly easy recipes, all tasty.

And not a diet book, but lots of good recipes in Vegan With a Vengance - and she has a fun attitude.

Maybe try checking out some vegan cooking blogs. Though I realize all people who write blogs are not experts, many times they are people who desire good tasting food and you can read others' responses to their recipes to see about how they actually turn out.

There are also vegan blogs dedicated to low-fat tasty recipes. I like Fat Free Vegan, but there are others:

Advice on low fat cooking/baking. When you are sauteeing start with a small amount of oil and the rest water, adding a little at a time or you can just use water. Seasoning makes a big difference when cooking. Also when you bake you can use applesauce for most of the oil, I make a chocolate cake that I change out half the oil with applesauce.
Fat free vegan and many others are great blogs. I also have one it's http://dreaminitvegan.blogspot.com/

Hope this helps
