Dirty Holdouts
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 9:25 AM
I've taken the challenge and am doing well, but have been soo resistant to giving up coffee in the morning and half&half in it. Surprisingly, I've found it easier to give up real cheese! I know coffee is not good for me and is harmful to the earth. Today I'm going to buy the decaf green tea and make the switch. Interested in reading about other member's areas where they're hanging on to certain non-vegan items. Not judging- each of us makes our own choices, just curious...

Hi Harmonicgogiberry! Love your little pig in the picture...beautiful creature. Firstly, I'm not all that convinced that coffee is all that bad for us - within reason, of course. Some studies show it helps with memory, etc. (well..according to Dr. Oz anyway) Also, buying ethical beans isn't a bad thing for the earth...is it? Like you, I feared giving up my one or two tablespoons per day of the Half & Half but have been doing ok so far with Silk, a soy product that "creams" up the coffee. Have you tried it yet? I like your idea of the green tea, though. I sometimes wonder if I could switch too...maybe it's just that I need something warm to drink in the morning as opposed to the idea that I truly "need" that cup of coffee.

Hi Meriberry! Well, it sure does get confusing sometimes. One day coffee is good for you, the next day it's bad. Same with many other things. I know it's highly acidic and has been linked to several health issues like ulcers and digestive problems. I guess, for me, the biggest problem is the habit; feeling I "need" my morning coffee. I haven't tried the Silk, so thanks for that suggestion. Maybe I should reduce my intake rather than going "cold tofurky!" Organic beans are another great idea. I appreciate the tips!

If you really want the truth about the dangers of coffee And tea, just ask the moderators of this 21 day kickstart seminar. They are both addictive and damaging to your health.

My dirty little hold 'might' be Olive Garden salad. I know I can go 21 days, but it is one of the things I love and I know there is some cheese in the dressing. The dressing is what makes it so good so without the dressing there will be no point. I haven't faced that temptation yet, but I know it's just a matter of time until one of my friends wants to go to Olive Garden for soup an salad. We'll see what happens!

Cheese on salad...yeah that is a rediculously addictive combination. I got some nutritional yeast flakes to overcome this. I shake it on like I would have parmasian cheese in the past, and it works wonders for me. I also use it on pasta dishes.

Which is why I'm choosing to cut back- after doing my own research I agree that it is not beneficial. The point, though, is that there are many reliable sources that say that coffee, in moderation, isgood for preventing certain diseases and this is where it gets confusing. Here's just one example: http://www.ecosalon.com/20-surprising-facts-about-coffee/ Ultimately, we all need to make our own informed decisions. No question that decaf green tea is great for you, though!

Hmmmm....decaf green tea is good for you? Isn't just good ol' green tea good for you? The decaffing process might not be such a good thing either. Coffee and tea have been around for millenia (sp?) so for me, I'm sticking to my one or two cups of day. Guilt free.

Mariberry, I am with you. I eat a VERY clean, low-fat vegan diet. Everyone get your hands off of my strong black coffee! LOL

I'm keeping my coffee for the time being, it's only one or two cups a day.

Yeah, I'm not giving up my coffee (yet), either, though I have cut down to just one cup a day and then I switch to an herbal green tea (without caffeine) I got from my local health food store.

I switched from half and half to Silk creamer, but didn't like it too much. Now I use non-dairy creamer, which I assumed didn't have milk products in it. After reading this thread, I read the label and found it does. Anyone know of any vegan substitute for the powered creamer?

I've seen a vegan powdered creamer, but never used it. If you don't find it in the section with the regular creamers, maybe look in the section of your store where kosher parve items are kept. Link: http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=vegane&StoreType=BtoC&Count1=793972194&Count2=711112618&CategoryID=1&Target=products.asp (Note that this one does have partially hydrogenated oil, i.e. trans fat.) Pangea Vegan Store has this one, which has a better ingredients list, but I've never seen it for sale in a store in my area. http://www.veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=844 Hope you find something you like! My mom was a hardcore "creep" user and found she liked oat milk in her coffee.

My coffee with cream was the last thing to go. It took a few months to completely kick the habit. I only like coffee with cream in it (not even 2% cow milk) so the only option for me was to give it up completely. I do like tea, though, so I slowly started substituting black tea with milk until the coffee craving subsided, and then I gave up the milk. Now I have a cup or two of green tea every day or occasionally a black tea. It's been about a month or two since I've had a coffee but the craving isn't quite gone yet. I'm so glad I discovered this forum today -- everyone has such amazing comments!

Thanks for the info and links, Shanna. I'll see what the natural foods section of my store has. I'm still puzzled about how a product can claim to be "non-dairy" when it has milk in it!

I am a coffee addict, too! If you like your coffee with regular cream, I think you will just need to give yourself a few days to get used to a new taste -- soy milk and creamer seem to have a malty flavor that's not the same as cream, but it's easy to develop a taste for it. I've tried to give up coffee and keep going back ...

My dirty holdout isn't anything that is beneficial at all. It isn't food but cigarettes. I've cut back drastically but I have a few in the day.

I don't use cream in my coffee, but I am still trying to give it up. I am on day six and having a rough time. Will someone remind me why coffee is bad?

You don't have to give up coffee on the Kickstart! I am a much happier person in the morning after I've had my cup of Joe.
