anyone else having this issue?
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 1:29 PM

I've been vegetarian for a couple years now, but since going vegan my appetite is insatiable! I eat, then I'm ravenous an hour or two later! I've tried eating beans or soy with each meal hoping the protein would satisfy me, but it doesn't. is anyone else going through this? any suggestions?

Try adding whole grains to each meal, along with the beans, veggies and fruits you're already eating. Adding some nuts might help too.

You may have an incredible metabolism! And the grains idea above is a good one.

I find that when I'm hungry (or simply craving something hungry or not), I will grab fruit that has a lot of skin, such as an apple, pear, or grapes. This really fills me up in a pinch. I'm guessing the reason is it has concentrated fiber in the skin and in the fruit itself, plus the water volume.

I used to have that problem. Turned out I was just thirsty. So I drink lots of water with my meals. After everyother bite I take a drink to help create a feeling of satiability. When I get the slight hunger feeling between meals I get a tall glass of cold water and down it. Shuts that hunger feeling right up.
One more thing try to limit starches and grains in your meals. Some individuals get hungery more often when their diet is high starch and grain, but some individuals don't experiance that. Smile

It may also just be that you're not eating enough. You've eliminated some high-fat, high-calorie stuff (cheese, f'rinstance) and you may not be getting enough calories in you now.

I have the same problem. am able to eat ALL day...I only feel full if I STUFF myself, and that doesnt last long, and who wants to stuff themselves. I have been vegetarian for YEARS ( like more than 20) and vegan for about 3 years...I did not lose weight after becoming vegan, in fact I gained weight from eating nuts (cant eat 7 almonds and consider that a snack after running 3 miles...just doesn't work for me). So no more nuts...I do find that when I drink more water (just water not tea or juice), I eat less...I also think its partly emotional...but who knows...I only know I would eat NOTHING if I were not able to stay vegan because anything from an animal (or anything else that had to be killed to be turned into food) really is a total turn off .... try adding (and counting) nuts...walnuts are the best I hear!

wow, thanks so much for all the replies! I will definitely give each a try, especially drinking more water. I KNOW I don't drink enough water. Embarassed

@Susan: I *WISH* I had a fast metabolism! Laughing I am hypothyroid...quite the opposite...but I will choose an apple for my next between-meal hunger pang and see if that helps fill me up.

also gonna' try adding whole grains to my meals(although i still feel i should be careful about starches, as I have about 35 lbs. to lose Crying or Very sad )

thanks again, and anyone else who'd like to comment, please do! Wink

Dr. Fuhrman suggests eating 1 lb. of fresh veggies and 1 lb. of cooked veggies every day.

I have a hard time choking down that much food in a single day when you also consider the grains and beans I add to that. Smile

When I get like that I usually have some grapes and water and it fills me right up.

I went vegan from being a long-time vegetarian back in October and I definitely know what you mean! I was ravenous for about a week and a half and felt like I had to eat constantly! But my body adjusted and now I'm back to normal. Sometimes I have to remind myself to eat lunch now! Make sure you have healthy snacks on hand at all times so that you don't get tempted to eat something you shouldn't. Fruit, dry cereal, Lara bars, carrots are all good portable snacks, especially if you are working during the day. Packing a load of snacks for the day kept me from raiding the office candy dish. Now I just bring one snack for the afternoon. Good luck!
