What if you don't cook?
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 2:17 PM
Hey everyone, Many people do not cook - here are some ideas for picking up food on the go or making some food with little prep - care to add your vegan on-the-go favorites?
Breakfast: Smoothie – we have several kinds of smoothies on our 21 Day menu or you can buy them at Juice Joint, Robeks or other smoothie places Cold cereal with plant milk – easy as pie Pumpernickel bagel, toasted with jam Oatmeal packets Soy yogurt cup
Lunch: Salad bar –load up on veggies, go for the balsamic vinegar Baked sweet or regular potato –can toss in microwave, top with salsa and black beans Vegetable Burrito – either from Mexican place, like chipotle or Amy’s frozen foods Frozen Meals by Amy’s – brown rice and veggies, vegan pizza, etc. McDougall’s Cup of Soup (my personal favorite) – really cheap and all you do is fill the cup with hot water, empty seasoning packet and steep for a few minutes Dinner: Take out: Steamed veggies with tofu over rice - Chinese Pasta marinara, side broccoli Avocado/Cucumber roll – Japanese Veggie Burger Salad and soup Post your suggestions!

Even if you don't cook, you can learn how to cook rice and steam frozen vegetables. Add your choice of bottled vegan sauce and you have dinner for at least twice a week.

on the days I don't cook or have been out running errands, I make a pit-stop at taco bell...the 7-layer burrito is vegan if you order without cheese and sour cream: it comes with rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, and avocado sauce. you can also order a bean burrito al fresco style (with tomato and onion/pico).

We have done the bean burrito no cheese if we are on a road-trip, but you should know that a burrito-sized serving of Taco Bell beans contains 8 grams of partially hydrogenated fat. Quote:

My favourite fast food place is Extreme Pita (or Gourmet Pita depending on where I am when a snack attack hits). These places are similar to Subway in that you can pick your size of pita - regular or whole wheat - and which veggies/sauces you want to add. Their falafel whole wheat pita with veggies and a dollop of hummus is Extremely good!

I cook very little and hope this thread gets lots of good ideas for us non cookers! One thing I do is steam broccoli and then make either the pad Thai or miso noodle soup cup from mcdougall and throw them together. I don't love veggies either but I get in lots of broccoli this way.

Thank goodness someone has been brave enough to start a "I'm notta cook" thread! I thought I was the only one! Anyway, I love the following no-cook meals (some do involve the microwave, though): 1. microwaved sweet potato with lemon juice, sliced banana, and cinnamon 2. morningstar farms breakfast patty, toast with all- fruit jam, soy yogurt "topping" over sliced fruit 3. vegan burger with salsa topping on whole grain bun 4. tomato w/rice soup over sliced polenta with a side order of sliced mushrooms/tomatoes/cucumbers and fat free dressing Snacks are usually a Lara bar or fruit with soymilk.

you are all too funny really ..perhaps you need to have a think about what you are saying.. preparing food whether it be a salad tossed together or stuff turned to nuclear waste in a microwave it is all cooking ... I am no cook but have learnt to enjoy what i call fast food.. i look for recipes that take one (at most 2) pots and that I can prepare in 15-20 minutes TOPS. there are lots out there and one reason I love vegetarian/vegan food is that it is fast .. a quick steam in a steamer. rice cooked in those clever rice cookers some yummy sause/herbs/spices thrown together and always a yummy meal. Don't forget that it being winter and cold, that soups with lots of veges are great.. a few lentils, pumpkin, carrots, garlic (to ward off colds and vampires) spices to suit my favourite is cumin and some tomatoe paste and other veges to taste... a yummy warm meal with some crusty fresh bread. We can be fabulous cooks!!!

I've been making a lot of what I think Serene has called "Lazy Soups" (great term). For me, it's different combinations of a box of veggie broth or bottle of tomato juice, a rinsed can of beans, a package of frozen veggies, sometimes a can of tomatoes, and some spices. Just dump it all in a pot, bring it to a boil, and let it simmer. It's really not cooking; it's just turning on the stove! Seriously!

It's already been mentioned, but rice cookers are the perfect solution for the non-cooking cook . Armed with a rice cooker, batches of beans cooked in a pressure cooker (or from cans as needed!), bags of washed greens and even winter squash can be bought already chunked for a quick steam, you have the basis for many-an-easy meal. Lani P.S. Confession. I actually have TWO rice cookers. Sometimes one is still holding some rice and I've a hankering for barley for me' soup!
