Protein and the 21 Day Menu
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 4:00 PM

A few people have emailed with concerns that today's menu doesn't offer enough protein. If you are getting enough calories, you are getting enough protein. The daily menus are hard to add up because the snacks are not analyzed all the time and the DIY recipes or eating out is not factored in - here's an example:

Here's today's menu:
Breakfast: Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal - 7g/protein per serving - some might eat more than 1 serving, which is fine

Lunch: Hummus and Veggie Sandwich
Hummus is 4.3g/protein but the bread and veggies are not accounted for, which would add to the amount

Snack: Apple Slices and Raisins
The snack's nutritional content is not analyzed - not a ton of protein her, but would add to the fiber content for sure

Dinner: Kickstart Dining Out: Mexican
Dinner, since it is eating out is not analyzed, but you can bet that a vegan mexican dinner is a great source of protein with beans, rice and veggies.

Here's more info about protein:

We are a society suffering the effects of EXCESS , not from lack of!!! Once the human body is done growing, our protein needs go way down...assuming that most of the people on this program are 18 years or older, protein really is not a concern. You are absolutely correct in saying that once a person consumes enough "healthy" calories (that is NOT a day of vegan sweets and processed junk or snacks) protein needs will no doubt be met. The protein question is so ingrained into our minds, even those of us who are enlightened about eating a healthy, evolved cruelty free diet still ask that question....let it go...you're getting enough..(unless there are extenuating circumstances...like an eating disorder etc)

Thank you for posting such useful information on the meal plans and protein. There is so much miss-information out there about protein, I think it really confuses people. Especially people just making the switch from a meat/dairy primary diet to low fat vegan diet.
