Day 4: Cranky Yet??
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 5:54 PM

I know I am! Grrr... I've given up alot. I know, I know, I'm really gaining health and losing weight and saving the planet. But right now this is damn hard and even other posts are annoying me! Just thought this would be a safe place to vent. Anyone else feeling it yet?

Not yet, but I will, if history is any guide. What helped me last time was to eat more, and to make a list of all the vegan foods I love. Not tolerate -- LOVE. It ends up being a long list and makes me feel a lot better. In fact, I think I'll do it now; hope you don't mind.

Watermelon
Avocado sushi
Popcorn
Raspberry and/or mango sorbet
Steamed soymilk
Hot cereal with Earth balance and agave syrup
Spaghetti
Hummus!
Baba ganouj
Good French bread
Tabouli
Cucumber salad
Fuji apples
Canned fruit cocktail (so sue me. Smile
Tomato, avocado, and sprouts sandwich with Vegenaise on soft wheat bread
Raisin bran with soymilk
Spanish rice
Fried rice
Veggie gyoze (potstickers)
Miso soup
Stir-fried rice noodles

There's more, but now I need to go grab some hummus.

Hang in there; it does get better (which is not to say I don't empathize with the current suckage).

I am low-fat vegan in my everyday life, so I am not doing too bad.
My wife who likes to sneak a bit of cheese here and there is a different matter. I think she is about ready to go all stabby on me. Smile

Don't worry. If you weren't vegan before your body is going through a detox (or if you weren't a particularly "healthy" vegan) and crankiness is a side effect. It should get better in another week. One of the first things my fiance noticed when I became vegan last year is that my moods improved and leveled out (after the initial, of course). Hang in there!

The crankiness will go away. Be sure to eat enough. When I first made the change I wasn't eating enough food. I was tired and cranky. I think for this first 3 weeks even if you over eat, but eat the right foods it would be better than getting discouraged. Just my opinion.

Not feeling cranky yet. I think my body is actually really happy about the changes. Cheese was a hard habit to break. Now lets see how I am feeling next week lol.

Wow, I'm feelin' the love now! Thanks for all the support, and especially the tips from serenevannoy. I think I am trying too hard to meet the challenge and I'm hungry and withdrawing from sugar. Better to eat more than bite someone's head off (oh, that's not vegan, is it?)

Hee! No, consuming your fellow humans is not vegan, with a few exceptions I won't mention in a family group. Wink

I keep lurking around the kitchen like I'm gonna find.... I don't know what! Anybody else lurking? It's really annoying. Mad

This maybe really bad, but I just ran to Starbucks for a latte with soy. Helps stops the hunger...for now and with wanting something sweet. Smile Need to plan better.

For all of you "lurkers" this may hit the sweet spot.
I made some chewy granola bars. These are great for on the go mornings or an afternoon snack. I also posted this on an other thread.

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. nutmeg
1 cup honey 2/3 smooth peanut butter
1 cup honey (or maple syrup or other honey substitute) I used trader Joes Agave Nectar maple syrup
2 2/3 cup rolled oats ( I used a multi grain of rye, barley, oats and wheat made by country choice)
1/3 wheat germ
flax seeds (I just sprinkled a handful in)
2 cups of any combo:
coconut, raisins, carob chips, nuts, any fine chopped dried fruit,.
I did coconut and vegan carob chips

Mix honey & peanut butter until creamy, then the rest of ingredients. Press onto a greased 9x13 pan and bake at 350f/180c until barley brown. DO NOT OVER COOK! Before it cools completely cut into squares with a pizza cutter. Wrap individually and keep in air tight container. These freeze extremely well.

Your stomach shouldn't be a waist basket.

Getting more sleep may help. Your body is going through some great changes, but change takes energy. And you are detoxing as well. So sleep and rest should be beneficial. Also some nice fresh fruit may improve your outlook. Just think of how great you are going to feel. And nothing can stop you.

I'm not cranky yet, but did have that when I tried to go vegan a couple of years back...so I feel your pain. Wink

Here's one thing I did that really helped me this time (so far, at least). Before the kickstart began, I went to my favorite local supermarket, and went straight to the produce section. I said to myself..."anything HERE you can have"...and I walked really slowly through the bins, looking at every little thing. I noticed things I had never seen before...and things that I didn't think I'd see in deep, dark December. I picked up the usuals, and about 3 new things.

Then I went to the rice/bean aisle in the store...and did the same thing..."anything HERE you can have"...and again, I really took my time looking at the shelves. Picked up some really offbeat things to try.

This was a big thing for me. I swear, I've been "dieting" since a pre-teen, which is more than 30 years. Shocked I'm used to being told what I can't have (for weight loss, for diabetes, for heart-smart, etc)...so it was liberating for me to think of terms of the bounty of what I *can* have. More liberating than words can accurately express.

I came home from that shopping trip really feeling as if my eyes had been opened. For the first time, I truly saw the abundance of a healthy, vegan diet...and I felt JAZZED, not deprived. I actually WANT to cook now; I often considered it a necessary daily drudge. (Though I always did enjoy the fun, show-off cooking that makes my DH oooo and aaaah!) My perspective has changed, and I feel way better than I thought. I feel like the last 4 days have been an adventure...and I am really enjoying it.

I hope you come to that place...and if you don't feel free to vent!

Thanks, Jamie, great advice! I'm feeling better today, so remembering that feelings will come and then pass again also helps me. But focusing on what I CAN have is huge. They say a miracle is just a shift in perception... I think I'm shifting! This forum is a fantastic community. Thanks to all! Very Happy
