products you were surprised are not vegan?

I am doing much more detailed label reading and did not know that Altoids and Worchestershire sauce are not vegan. (Altoids - gelatin and W sauce - anchovies) Have you found any products you were surprised to find not vegan?

Cereals. Many have milk or honey as an ingredient. Total has milk.

Total has milk?!? Well, dang. I've been eating it all week thinking "good choice!" I never would have guessed that one of the main ingredients is non-fat milk (I just googled it).

I am new to this.. so I was surprised white sugar is not vegan. As far as i know it is not an animal product or dairy. Still don't know why? Someone said it is something about the way it is made but did not have time to elaborate. Any ideas? i also did not know gelatin was not vegan. sounds simple, just a thickener. I never knew what it was till this week. I looked on the net and found the answers to white sugar they are at: http://www.vegsource.com/jo/qa/qasugar.htm

Crackers! I couldn't get over how many of them contain dairy.

When I first started this journey I found if it came in a package it pretty much had some sort of animal product. I went back to vegetarian versus vegan after few years. Now it is MUCH easier to be vegan (because I have learned to eat the right way and not depend on processed foods! But I was in my 20s, and didn't know better!) But.... that being said. I found out I had Celiac 2 years ago and can't have wheat. So then I had to start looking at things again. Now is is soy sauce, salad dressings, GRAPE JUICE (if you can believe that) so that just further my journey to trying to break old habits and learn to truly eat whole foods, not packaged, and low fat. Be kind to yourselves and remember this is a journey to health. It isn't done overnight, and as your awareness grows old things become familiar and easier, then you can take the next step! I am SO PROUD of so many of the people here for asking all these great questions and working so hard! Keep up the good work!
Always offer kindness and a soft word to the beings around you; You do not know their journey. Your words can be the hug they need or the shove that breaks them.

When I went vegetarian a few months ago, I started to read labels much more, and as a result, I started cooking from scratch more. I felt so much better! I switched to almond milk and veggie cheese right away, because I suspected lactose intolerence. The cheese is just nasty, and now I noticed that it has cassien it. Can't say I mind giving it up!

The one that always gets me is body products. Things that I was so accustom to using, I had to change. First, I changed them to not have gluten and then vegan and non-gluten. I love LUSH, they have the best products and I feel really good using them. You just have to make sure to buy the vegan formulas.

They surprise me because most of them have lanolin or are tested on animals. Yick.

I have been vegetarian for 20 years, and have done the vegan thing off-and-on a couple of times, like for Lent or the past two kickstarts, so at this point I'm more surprised at the packaged foods that are vegan. I think PETA has a list on their website (which mostly consists of junk food). For some reason this week I started craving Ritz crackers, which I buy for my son and I was both disappointed and surprised to find that they are vegan. So are the Pillsbury crescent rolls. {Oh how they call to me with their fatty, processed, simple carb yumness.}
