Fell off yesterday...
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 7:41 PM
Was doing real well, but yesterday I got stressed out and grabbed whatever food was handy when I got hungry. BAD IDEA, I don't tolerate meat well to begin with and am allergic to dairy(not lactose intolerant, allergic to the milk protien), I grabbed cheese and pork bites that my brother put in the fridge. I bloated out and my muscles started to hurt. Started fresh this morning, and have behaved all day!

Don't beat yourself up. Part of learning to eat more kindly is being kind to YOURSELF, too. Good job getting right back into the game.

Hi gypwytch, Thanks for sharing. Nice to hear that you were able to jump back in today. Lots of people can have a slip like that and then it totally derails them. You were faced with a challenge and you were able to move past it. Often there's a lesson learned in the process. I experienced something similar today. Not so much falling off, but along the lines of not being fully prepared. I didn't make enough food to bring with me to work today, so I also picked up a veggie wrap, due to running low on time. A pre-made one that I've picked up nearly a hundred times from a nearby market. The thing is, it has cheese in it. But I figured I'd just take the cheese out. When I decided to eat, I noticed they had put twice the amount of cheese in place of the avocado. Didn't eat the cheese, but felt very wasteful. I was so bummed. I guess next time I will know for sure that I will have them prepare it when I buy it. But it happens sometimes - live and learn Best, James

Yes, good job on getting right back on the wagon! James, you raised a valid concern re: store-bought/catered veggie wraps. I'm attending an all-day workshop tomorrow where lunch is included, with vegetarian options available, but I'm stressing about the veggie wraps that I know will be offered - I'm wondering if they will have cheese inside too. I'm thinking of packing my own lunch but not sure what I can take that will be easy to keep unrefrigerated. I'm definitely taking my own fruit and some almonds to avoid the pastry tray at the break! Oh and some Silk and agave!

Planning is definitely a critical skill to staying a happy and well fed vegan. Skipping one meal is ok, and you'll feel great about yourself for not eating something just because it is convenient. A baked potato is an excellent snack to bring with you. It tastes good at room temperature and stays good outside the frig for several hours. Other good snacks are peanut butter sandwiches, fruit, and a container of brown rice mixed with beans and some spices or salsa(don't forget a fork to eat it with). Try to snack during a conference at short breaks. Then you won't get ravenously hungry and won't be so tempted to just grab whatever is at hand. In a conference at a hotel, if you ask a server, they will bring you a vegan choice 99% of the time even if it is not on the menu. I've had this happen numerous times.

Great suggestions! Thank you! I loved the baked potato/beans/salsa idea. One thing I do love is an almond butter sandwich with raisins...that little shot of "sweet" makes me forget all about jam! I'm set! Thanks again!

I feel like I've totally fallen off the wagon. I've been sick & not able to shop for healthy foods & my resolve weakened. I know I need to jump back in. I'm ready.

Don't worry about it; just start where you are. Be kind to yourself. If it were your best friend, you'd say "Oh, no problem, just dust yourself off and try again!" Well, there's no reason not to treat yourself just as kindly.

So glad to hear I am not the only one. Went to buy mustard for my partner at the British store here in Vienna and couldn't resist the cookies - they were vegan but the sugar contents were well beyond. And then I ate them all whilst reading! But this morning oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins and I am going to go to the local health food store for a hot lunch...

I had a bit of an off day, too. I think it was a good way for me to learn what trips me up, though. I was great until dinner. Basically being drained after work and having a martini made me less careful at dinner and I decided to have a pierogi with potato and cheese. I intended on eating only the ones stuffed with cabbage and mushrooms (so good!), but I wanted to try one of the other ones. The thing is - it didn't even taste that good! It was really boring compared to the one with the veggies. So it was a wake-up call for me that cheese does not equate with yum. Today is a new day. I am also learning that I do much better when I have things prepared and ready in the fridge. I cooked a bunch on Saturday and we've worked through all that, so I think I'll need to do some cooking today.

ooooh...perogies with veggies inside! Did you make them yourself? Care to share the recipe? I just love these starchy little morsels - my fave being spinach and feta...but if I could find some delicious veggie ones without the cheese I'm willing to switch!

Hee.... I wish I had the energy to make them myself! We bought them at a Polish market in Boston.
