Purchasing Nutritional Yeast
Posted Monday, January 4, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Hello everyone,

There have been lots of great suggestions on the boards here, and I really appreciate them. One of them has been to sprinkle nutritional yeast on food items that were once served with cheese. I have never tried this, so I just had a couple of questions before doing so.

Is nutritional yeast only found in healthfood stores? Also, is it just called nutritional yeast, or are there several different kinds? Any direction on this will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Best, James

Yes, it's usually called Nutritional Yeast. The most popular brand seems to be Red Star, which also calls it something like Red Star Vegetarian Formula or something like that. It's easily available online at places like bulk-foods.com, and at most health food stores, but depending on where you live, you *may* be able to find it at the grocery in the baking aisle, but I wouldn't count on it.

I know Ralphs on the west coast carries the Red Star brand, so possibly Krogers on the east coast does as well.

Whole foods definitely has nutritional yeast in the bulk section. They may also have it pre-packaged too.
