Why did YOU join Kickstart?
Posted Friday, September 10, 2010 at 11:31 AM

I thought it would be fun to hear all the many reasons so many of us joined Kickstart and why we are here.

For me, I need to lower my cholesterol, but I don't want to start on medication with its many side effects. I'm hoping going vegan works. Very Happy

Lots of reasons, I am overweight. I have higher than I would like cholesterol. I enjoy visiting with others that are on a similar path. I am a long time veg so I am also hoping I can help others on this new journey.

Always offer kindness and a soft word to the beings around you; You do not know their journey. Your words can be the hug they need or the shove that breaks them.

I was an almost vegetarian for many years, then I read "The Kind Diet", "Eating Animals" and watched "Food Inc." I was so disgusted with modern factory farming, I thought I'd give being a vegan a whirl, well that was March of this year, and I'm still with it. You just feel so much better!

Wow so many reasons..

1) it was a mistake. i didn't really know what i was getting myself into. i had toyed with the idea of being a vegetarian for years, spent time when i wouldn't eat meat one day a week. I never dove into it because i just wasn't sure of what i was doing. It seemed hard and there is conflicting information that made it confusing. I saw the support and laid out plan for this and decided to give it a try. I didn't even know what vegan was when i decided to try it.

2) the food looked good and easy.

3) a big one. I went to a slaughter house one day and it still haunts me. It was awful really awful. THose animals know what is happening. It is not neccessary. We don't need to eat them. If we don't need to, why should we?

4) meat causes so many health issues. I have high good and bad cholestrol;it's all moving. I want to live a long time and enjoy my old age. I am not a couch potato. I want to continue to hike, bike, dance, and kayak. I don't want arthritis, heart disease, or to become fat.

5)It would be great to lose 10-15 lbs. I have been the same weight for more than 10 years. I excerise 1 hour a day on a treadmill. I hate running. Boring. Time to change the diet. THere are only 2 ways to lose calories in or calories out.

6)eating the way i did produced cravings for unhealthy foods with sugar and salt.

7) I actually love beans, brown rice, fruit and veggies!

Cool I like feeling light, not like i need to roll away from the table.

9) now when someone asks me what is for dinner the response won't be a simple "pork chops, steak, chicken" That just always seemed wrong. Now it's Garbanzo Tacos, Lentil soup or something similar.

Great idea for a topic!

I joined kick start with the last January Kickstart. I went vegan in December and was having some troubles with meal planning, etc. I really needed to drop some weight and feel good in general! I was going through a lot of stress, my skin was sallow and my hair was dull and my nails were so thin and ripping. And wouldn't you know it the ad for KickStart popped up on Facebook and that is how I joined up. I really enjoy the Kickstarts. Eating Vegan has been a real saving grace for me and this place is so so helpful!

I never really liked meat much. But the diet experts pushed lean meats and low carbs, and I've been dieting for decades, so I ate grilled or baked lean meat and fish as advised for good health. Over the years, I suffered greatly with IBS that kept getting worse. Then I developed severe asthma, and was literally shut in for months. With time on my hands, I ended up reading about the vegetarian diet. At that point, I was so sick that I was no longer willing to eat anything I didn't enjoy, so the idea of giving up meat and milk was appealing. As I read more, I discovered things about the meat industry, the way animals were treated, things I'd never realized. That was it. I went vegetarian three months ago. For about a week, I felt much worse, but then my GI tract began to improve. Over the next few weeks, my IBS just vanished. I began to enjoy eating, rather than dreading it. It was an amazing change! Since I started out avoiding most dairy, and have never much liked eggs, going vegan seems like the logical next step. I joined the kickstart to learn how to do it right.

My husband has been a vegetarian for nearly 20 years. I met him 12 years ago and married him six years ago. I have flirted with vegetarianism for about ten years and decided to take the plunge. He is not necessarily a vegan, but since I am the cook and food shopper, he is ending up that way by default.

We live about 1/2 a mile from a pork processing plant. Those trucks full of pigs on the way to their doom pass our house all day long. It fills us with sadness and anger.

Don't make a New Year's Resolution...make a Decision!

This is my third Kickstart and I re-joined for the community and support of this group. I need the "kick" part in the program.

Meat and dairy (other than cheese) was not a problem for me. I never liked it - even as a child (but forced to eat it because my mother thought it was what I needed for health).

My reason for returning to this program each time is because I tend to get lazy and reach for processed, packaged, easy "food". The daily emails with lots of interesting recipes motivates me to be more conscious of what I'm eating.

I admit that my resolve is very weak at times - when I'm tired, hungry, stressed. I work with a large group of people who always bring in cakes, donuts, junk...and they all love to share. Rolling Eyes I need to emblazon "Just Say No" to the inside of my eyelids!! Intellectually, I "get it", but there's a "devil me" that sits on my shoulder and says "Go on - just one". I'd like to flick her off for good.

I watched "Stand Up to Cancer" last night and was tremendously moved by it. It seems disrespectful to me to continue to torment my body with unhealthy food after all I've learned from those who spend their lives researching this disease, and also those who have suffered from this condition.

All we are saying is "Give Peas a Chance"

I have been toying with Vegetarism for over 20 years since reading Vegetarian Times and Dr. John Mcdoughall books. I hope to start Monday and now that I downloading the app on my iphone I hope this will make it easier to stay on this wonderful diet. I have a family history of diabetes and am about 50 lbs. overweight. Therefore, this diet would be ideal for me to lose weight and get healthy. I also see the Peta movies on the treatment of animals and am appalled by it. Smile
