Raw Vegan

Just curious what other's here think of taking the Raw Vegan approach to eating. I've been reading about it off and on, and have tried several recipes, the green smoothies have become a favourite for breakfast. There is a series of courses on the raw diet being offered down island from me next june, I'm toying with the idea of going and becoming certified as a Raw Vegan Chef.

I have tried being a raw vegan on and off. The longest I lasted was about 5 months. It was very difficult for me to maintain. I felt better on it as opposed to a SAD diet (Standard American Diet - with meat) and lost weight; however, for me, it was hard to keep going on it because of lack of support. I don't know anyone personally that is a raw vegan. It takes a strong committment to eat only uncooked foods. Good luck to you if you decide to do it.

Wow! Sounds like you love a challenge! Very Happy

Personally, I'm not sure I could do "raw" especially in winter. I live in a cold country and long for hot soups and stews - comfort foods for me.

I admire your courage!

I've thought about incorporating it eventually in my quest for vegan life. I think it's an awesome option; however, I cannot see giving up cooked veggies, esp baked sweet potato as is... Good luck!

I eat a lot of raw foods, but I don't aim for anything like 100%. (And I'm not totally sold on the enzyme theories or the idea that cooked food is something to be avoided. But I feel great when I am eating lots of fresh, raw vegetables and fruits.) I do I enjoy a lot of the creative recipes though--especially flax and vegetable-based crackers that don't use flour. Raw chocolate is great. I've made raw cookies that were very good. I love the spiralizer for raw zucchini noodles.

I had a great raw meal at Roxanne's (north of SF, CA) several years ago. Keep meaning to go to Pure Food & Wine but have not done that yet.

There are some great raw blogs too. I particularly like Choosing Raw, here: http://www.choosingraw.com/

I have lots of raw days. Don't know that I could go 100%. I don't live in cold weather but there are still times that I crave soup, stew or chili. Some vegetable I just love better steamed than raw, brussel sprouts are one of my favorites. Baked sweet potatoes, zucchini and yellow squash. Some things are just more flavorful cooked, at least to me. I don't remember where I saw it but Dr. Fuhrman, author of "Eat To Live" had some arguments about 100% raw, saying there are some foods that are actually better for you cooked. You might want to just google "Fuhrman raw" and see what comes up.
I do feel great, light and "clean" when I eat raw.

I tried a raw diet for about 3 months. I put on some weight and never felt satisfied...possibly because I am very active (i run, lift weights, teach yoga etc). I also love things like vegetable stew and sweet potatoes with mashed avocado..I did not feel the energy that raw people talk about and never was able to get into a regular diet of the green smoothie thing...again I like food, not smoothies as meals. I think that MANY of the people who consider themselves raw are not 100% raw...I know a few raw chefs who are about 70-80% raw...to me thats more like a whole food program. Also the dehydrated stuff and the nut milks are just WAY too time consuming and cumbersome for me to prepare regularly. Possibly if I didnt have a family to cook for I might have the time to prepare those things..staying "simple raw" gets very boring very quickly, and the excess of fruit and fiber did a number on my digestive system...have fun if you try it though...its interesting to say the least.
