Dry Skin, Hands
Posted Friday, September 10, 2010 at 8:44 PM

Has anyone experienced dry skin since going veggie? It could be just that I am getting older, and I usually have problems in the winter, but this summer the skin on my hands has been dry enough to peel. Even when I am super vigilant about putting on hand creams, and yes I use natural type products, no petroleum based ingredients, etc., they continue to be dry enough to peel. I wear gloves for dishes and cleaning, and stick to natural, non-toxic cleaning products.

I eat more than enough fat. I know I am over the 10% threshold. I went vegetarian the 1st of the year and have been eating vegan for the last 6 to 8 weeks.

Hi Rita,
Yes, I experienced more dry skin when I transitioned. However, I learned quickly how to remedy this! I figured out that I was eating the wrong fats (oils, mostly).

My skin (and the rest of me) seems to respond well to mainly the Omega-3 fats: flaxseed and walnuts. I do have a little avocado now and then. I stay away from any added oils. My main fat intake comes from raw, unsalted nuts and seeds of all types: almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, redskin peanuts, and occasionally cashews.

I've found that when I eat like this, and use a good quality moisturizer on my hands, my skin stays in very good condition. I hope that helps you!

Thanks for the ideas. I generally have about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter a day. It's quick and easy, that's why. I do add walnuts to oatmeal in the winter.

I have been considering dropping my PB habit to 1 T/day. Depending on what I cook, I will use a small amount of oil. I know I could do better with the fat intake, but I am fairly active, walking at least 6 to 10 miles per week, plus running over 10+ miles.

Using something like sesame oil post shower seems to take care of the rest of me, but the hands suffer from being exposed and of course you wash your hands several times a day.
