Tomato Allergy & Substitutions
Posted Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 9:18 AM
Can anyone suggest tomato substitutions for tomato paste & puree, ketchup and other such things? Although tomatoes have been my favorite food item since childhood when I began eating them like apples, I have developed a worsening allergy to them over the past 2 years. I have found that red peppers make a nice substitute but I wonder if there are any other vegan substitutions that might work? Any suggestions most appreciated!

Hi there, I wonder - are you allergic to cooked tomatoes as well? The reason I ask is that my stepmother has a raw tomato allergy, but can eat spaghetti sauce since it's cooked. Jill Eckart PCRM

Tomato Free Pasta Sauce 1 onion - chopped 1 clove garlic - minced juice of one lemon 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 can beets - drained (reserve the liquid) 1 can pumpkin 3/4 cups vegetable broth 2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce (Bragg's, Tamari, whatever) 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil 1 ½ teaspoons arrowroot, moistened with 2 tablespoons reserved beet juice Sautee onion and garlic in 1/4 cup vegetable broth until onion is translucent and slightly brown. Add lemon juice and vinegar. Simmer for 5 minutes. Puree beets until very smooth. Add beets, pumpkin puree, salt, and basil to pan. Stir until combined. Whisk in the remaining broth. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes. Do not over-cook; beets discolor with prolonged cooking. If sauce is too thick, add a little more broth to thin. Whisk in the moistened cornstarch. Cook for 1 more minute. Taste and adjust seasoning. (Usually more tamari or maybe some tabasco) Serve over whole grain pasta, top with nutritional yeast flakes.

oh, that's sad! i get a little bit of a rash if i eat too many tomatoes, but nothing serious. i just try to space them out. that's hard in august when they're perfect! but yeah, my first thought was roasted red peppers. (not the ones in oil, and it's also really easy to do these yourself without oil at home.) chopped or pureed, perhaps with broth or carrot juice i bet you can substitute for tomato paste and sauce in most things. actually, that sounds good. i'm going to try that myself. because i love carrot juice in cooking and roasted peppers are one of my favorite things. the recipe above looks interesting too. i should eat more beets.

Thanks to everyone for responding! And thanks for the recipe & tips! The allergy started as raw tomatoes then worsened each time to include cooked ones causing illness, blisters, tightened throat, etc. Being vegan is exciting (& fattening if you suddenly start loving food & cooking as a result!) but tomatoes are the main ingredient in many recipes. Thanks again.

After I talked about it here, I had to have it, so I made up a big batch last night (that recipe will have you in lunches for a couple of days) and I baked some corn tortillas on my taco shell rack, for some great blackbean tacos. And I will be having it again for lunch, obviously.
