Raising a vegan baby
Posted Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 10:28 AM

Anyone have tips on doing so in a healthy manner? I have a six month old so it's not too much of an issue right now but I don't want to raise her drinking cow's milk and of course I don't want to have her eat meat. So I was wondering if anyone had tips on the best way to go about this and what I need to consider as far as nutrients/vitamins go for a growing child. Thanks!

A great resource is Veg Family. I could spend hours on this site: http://vegfamily.com/.

More specific to your question: http://vegfamily.com/babies-and-toddlers/index.htm.

yourveganmom.com has a lot of info there but having raised several vegan kids, I can tell you that protein and fats are the major concern. Kids need fats and protein to grow their little bodies and brains. Get and keep her used to eating spinach and chickpeas (garbanzo beans) I make a lot of tofu cheesecake and tofu cookies. After she is 2, you can try peanut butter and jelly on vegan bread. Smucker's uncrustables are vegan and the kids love them. Good luck.
