Honey, and to a lesser extent yeast flakes are a hot-button for some vegans.

I find it an interesting discussion myself. I chose a vegan lifestyle for religious purposes, and moved my wife to it for health reasons.

Honey is different from milk or eggs in that it is essentially a plant product that was crafted by an animal. However bees do die in the process of harvesting honey.

I avoid honey at home, but if if a vegetarian friend offers me a bran muffin and I taste honey in it, I don't flip out. Smile

Honey, by most definitions, is not vegan. You can stay on the safe side of everyone's "vegan rules" by using agave nectar instead.

right: honey is not vegan, in the generally accepted definition of that word. bees are insects (of course), which are part of the kingdom animalia.

if you like honey, you'll probably like agave nectar, which has additional benefits in that it has a more gentle glycemic effect than both sugar and honey.

yeast, however, is totally vegan. some people avoid yeasts because of sensitivities or allergies, but that has nothing to do with veganism. yeasts are microorganisms, but they fall into the same kingdom as mushrooms: fungi. they are not animals. Smile

At the Needmore commune in Indiana, there was a group there that were militant-vegans. No yeast flakes...the yeasts were enslaved, I was told. They even had "science" to show that yeast cells contain "nitrogenious" (I can't be spelling that right) compounds consistent with animal cells... Whatever, I am eating them. In fact, if you eat raw grapes, you also eat the yeast growing on them.

On a funny side-note, the most militant of the anti-honey group, had the exterminator come at regular intervals. :|

that sounds like a good story. Smile

re: exterminators, i may be an ethical vegan, but in the case of pests i do draw the line at cockroaches in my house (though we don't spray--we use borax). and if my cat decides to exterminate a mouse, that's his choice. Wink

Honey is definitely a hard topic for vegans. Yes, bees are technically classified as animals, but they are not neccessarily sentient beings in the way that self-preserving humans are.

I actually gave up honey easily since I didn't really eat it, and use agave nectar in place of it. Agave tastes a lot more watery that the thick sweetness of honey, but less musty in flavor.

You could also try brown rice syrup, which is more similar to the texture of honey but less sweet. If you do decide to stick with honey, do a bit of research and try locally farmed honey.

As for yeast flakes... LOL. They don't have central nervous systems. Eat 'em up!

ALL HAIL SEITAN!!!
