If you click "Forums" first, then "Search," you can enter "triglyceride" into "Search terms." I think you will find a lot has been posted over the years.

If triglycerides are going up on a vegan diet then there are two possible dietary culprits: fat and refined carbohydrates. If you have your fat down to about 10 of calories, then more than likely it's the refined carbs such as flour-based foods. You may be very sensitive to those and should focus more on whole grains like oats, rice, barley, quinoa, etc.

RE: High Triglycerides level as a vegan?

So I have just had blood work done. Been a vegetarian since October 2011. Gradually moved toward vegan diet. Cholesterol 211, triglycerides 231 - doc not worried about either number. But did put me on Armour thyroid, and vitamins for B12 and D deficiency. Thyroid and B12 run in the family (who, until recently, were meat eaters.) It's been a long time since anyone has posted. Wondering how things have worked out.

RE: Has your tastebuds changed?

My tastebuds have definitely changed. It is getting more difficult to eat out because most things taste too salty or too greasy. Formerly, I did not enjoy being in the kitchen, but now I am starting to like to cook my own meal. I made my first hummus yesterday and loved the fact that I controlled how much salt and lemon juice went into the dish. I loved the taste of the finished product. I am really enjoying cooking with a wide variety of spices.

RE: Has your tastebuds changed?

I truly believe our taste buds change their preferences in the 21 days mentioned in the PCRM info. I have lost my desire for both meat & dairy & genuinely like non-dairy milks, except rice milk which is just OK. Stick with it because vegan is backed by the science. Personally, after 6 wks. I LOVE the vegan recipes. Hang in there.

RE: What's with the Saladmaster ?

you can find them on e-bay. they used to be a hostess gift at home parties. My mom had an older one.. where the base is attached to the counter by a suction cup.. the new ones with feet look better.

They do work well for the most part. sometimes what happens is part of an item will get between the round spinny thing and the back of the machine.. and a whole piece will come out the bottom. you can see this with the red onion in the video on how to make broccoli soup on pcrm.

the round spinny attachments go on by turning them counterclock wise into groves.. sometimes they can be hard to get off and on.. i have more troubles than some poeple.

overall it is a great little gadget, if you get it cheap enough.
a good food processor beats it hands down.

RE: High Triglycerides level as a vegan?

ZenBohemian: FIrst, congratulations on your weight loss and your commitment to a vegan diet! Second, forgive me if I'm repeating what's been said here already.

Re: nuts, seeds and avocado. Not sure how much of these foods you are consuming but even tho they're considered "healthy" fats, they're still fats and have the potential to increase your triglyceride (TG) levels. It's doubtful that a small amount of maple syrup could be elevating your TG on its own.

Have you had a thyroid panel done recently? Hypothyroidism can cause elevated TG levels. Too much carbohydrate can elevate TG levels, especially fruit and fruit juices, so I would limit yourself to 4 oz juice (OJ with calcium is a good choice) and 1-2 med pieces of fruit/day. About 3 dates = one fruit serving.

I would concentrate on increasing your exercise. A great way is to get a pedometer (Maybe you could borrow one from a friend. If not, they are not expensive) Calibrate it for your stride length following directions and after wearing for one day, try to increase the number of steps you take each day. You can even walk around your house while you're reading or talking on the phone.

Hope this helps!

RE: nuts and bolts of flaxseed for omega 3

Hey all,
Jack Norris, RD, has a comprehensive explanation of Omega-3s on his website, Vegan Health. It should clear up most of the confusion.

http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/omega3

The problem in the modern American diet (SAD) is an excess of Omega-6 due to over-consumption of fried, fatty foods.

I take the Deva Omega-3 supplement, made from algae, and am happy with it. No reason to think it's NOT working!

Here's another link from the Vegetarian Resource Group. Look for "Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Vegans"

RE: nuts and bolts of flaxseed for omega 3

From wikopedia..
Dietary sources of n?6 fatty acids include:
avocado
nuts
cereals
whole-grain breads
soybean oil
pumpkin seeds
acai berry

Again.. not much of what i eat unless the soymilk i have in the morning has it in it.

I looked around on the net at both omega 3 and omeaga 6 (n-3 & n6) just got more confused. Doesn't look like i get much of either.. I decided to add a few walnuts to my daily intake.. maybe 10... or a vegan fish oil pill.. still have to research brands for contamination, bio-availability, and effectiveness.. i don't want to throw money down the drain. I used to buy shaklee... LOVE LOVE LOVE them.. and trust their effectiveness.. BUT they have gelatin. i even wrote the company to see if they are coming out w/vegan products.. they said no, not now, but would pass my email to the right department.

RE: nuts and bolts of flaxseed for omega 3

The DRI (the government set standard) for ALA omega-3 is 1.1 grams per day for adult women. As stated in the DRI publication regarding essential fatty acids, this number is based on "the highest median intake of ALA by adults in the US where a deficiency is basically non-existent." What does that mean? It means that this particular nutrient, like a lot of nutrients, don't really manifest as problems due to lack of intake, so no one really knows what the minimum amount should be. They navigate around this by just recommending a high average of what people consume anyway.

To put that 1.1 gram recommendation into perspective, one tablespoon of flaxseed oil has 7 grams of ALA, one tablespoon ground flaxseed has 1.6 grams ALA, 7 walnuts have 2.6 grams ALA. So it doesn't take much. And of course ALA is found in "everyday" plant foods as well.

But I can't emphasize enough the importance of the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. Research keeps showing over and over that this is far more relevant in terms of reaping the benefits of omega-3s. Im not opposed to supplements. But the first step is lowering total fats, thereby allowing the omega-3s to work their magic.

RE: nuts and bolts of flaxseed for omega 3

I eat flaxseed every day, for the omega-3s. I find that I also enjoy the nutty flavor. I use the ground flaxseed, though I recently read (in Brendan Brazier's Thrive that the pre-ground is inferior to grinding it yourself, due to loss of omega-3 oil in the grinding process), and mix it in my oat/wheat bran cereal, which I eat every day. I use about 1.5 teaspoons, which I add after the cereal has cooled a bit.

More and more research is showing the vital importance of omega-3s, so I would suggest eating flaxseed as a good source. As with anything, the whole food is preferable over the supplement, or the oil, so you're making a good choice by getting the seed and grinding it.

I'll sure have to defer to Susan on that one. I'll be interested to see what she says.

RE: nuts and bolts of flaxseed for omega 3

Hi Susan & Vikki,
My family history includes heart disease, high choresterol (all moving, little plaque), mom had breast cancer, i had a small spot on my back that was the beginning of cancer. Also most lose their memory in old age. That is hard to take for people with college educations and higher than average IQ's.
From what i have read omega 3 is essential to good health. I would rather be safe than sorry. Also if it impoves memory terrific!
I wanted to make sure i got all the omega 3 i need and thought it was hard to do with a strict vegan diet. I don't eat fish at all or nuts much.

I take a multi, bcomplex, cal/mag and fish oil everyday.. Those are just to "make sure" ... The fish oil pill has geletin.. thought I would explore my options on other ways. One would be a vegan pill.. but flaxseed does it too.. I guess I could put it in my oatmeal when i have it and take a pill when i don't eat oatmeal.

The one reason i never went vegetarian or vegan is I did not feel i knew enough about it to get the proper nutrition. Now that i do a fairly strict (i eat geletin in pills) vegan it is time to revisit and make sure i get what i need. I don't want to get 3 months down the road and find i didn't do something necessary, that would have been a simple change.

So, is my thought process going the right way? Do i need a supplement? Flaxseed? and how much?
