PCRM Program to Treat and Prevent Diabetes Now on DVD
Jason Wyrick was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in his 20s and faced taking insulin for the rest of his life—until he turned to the diabetes treatment approach recommended PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D. Since then, Jason has lost 120 pounds, and he now has no symptoms of diabetes. The DVD begins with eight essential lessons facilitated by Dr. Barnard. Topics range from “Design a Diabetes Diet for Maximum Weight Control” to “Healthy Eating During Work, Travel, and Holidays.” The lessons are based on the dramatic results of a landmark diabetes study conducted by Dr. Barnard, author of Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Diabetes Care, found that a low-fat vegan diet treats type 2 diabetes more effectively than a standard diabetes diet and can help many people with diabetes lose weight, gain control of their blood sugar, and reduce or eliminate their need for medications.
The DVD also features Chef Toni Fiore, host of Totally Vegetarian, a PBS cooking and lifestyle series that has aired in 75 million U.S. homes. Chef Fiore shows viewers how to prepare fast and satisfying recipes at home that eliminate the need for calorie counting and restricted portions. Chef Fiore’s segment includes delicious ideas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The DVD’s final segment introduces PCRM director of diabetes education and care Caroline Trapp, M.S.N., C.D.E., and PCRM staff nutritionist Susan Levin, M.S., R.D. Ms. Trapp and Ms. Levin offer viewers tips to find healthy—and tasty—choices in their local grocery story while sharing cooking and money-saving ideas.
