Seinfeld Alumna, Soap Star, Students Rally for Healthy School Meals
Even comedians know there’s nothing funny about the impact unhealthy school lunches have on students’ health. So last month, author and former Seinfeld writer Carol Leifer joined PCRM’s national school lunch call-in day. She asked Congress to give students healthy plant-based options in their lunch lines. In her phone message, Leifer asked every representative and senator to co-sponsor the Healthy School Meals Act, H.R. 4870. Other Celebrity Supporters >

Lab RatNew Chemical-Testing Bills Are First Step for Consumer and Animal Protection
This Mother’s Day, Congress could give mothers the gift of a safer future for their children. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law banning depictions of animal cruelty. Despite this decision, cultural perspectives about the status of animals in society are improving. This August, PCRM will bring together a global panel of experts to discuss existing and promising alternatives to the use of animals in research at the Animals, Research, and Alternatives: Measuring Progress 50 Years Later conference. As revelers celebrate Cinco de Mayo today, they should think twice when ordering high-fat foods at Mexican fast-food restaurants. With more than 2,100 calories and more fat and sodium than most people should eat in a day, the Charbroiled Steak Nachos at Baja Fresh tops a list of five foods to avoid. Other offenders in the report from dietitians at the Cancer Project, a PCRM affiliate, include items at Chevys and Chili’s. Better Mexican Restaurant Options >
