Sens. McCain and Obama on Animal Testing

caged catWith the presidential election just around the corner, PCRM wants to know where Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama stand on animal testing. PCRM scientists want the public to sign a petition asking McCain and Obama to tell us what they think about the Food and Drug Administration not mandating the use of proven alternatives to animal testing by companies applying for approval for their products.

The FDA's counterparts in the European Union have already mandated the use of scientifically proven alternatives to animal testing when available.

PCRM and an international coalition of scientists, doctors, and animal-protection organizations filed the Mandatory Alternatives Petition with the FDA on November 14, 2007. The petition asks the FDA to mandate the use of validated nonanimal testing methods, when those alternatives exist, to create safer drugs for American consumers. The FDA is currently reviewing the initiative.

Federal law requires that PCRM must be strictly nonpartisan. PCRM neither supports nor opposes any candidate for any elective office.
