Kristie Sullivan, M.P.H.

Kristie Sullivan, M.P.H., is a scientific and policy adviser with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nationwide organization of physicians and laypersons that promotes preventive medicine, especially good nutrition, and addresses contro­versies in modern medicine, including ethical issues in research.

As a scientific and policy adviser, Ms. Sullivan promotes alternatives to the use of animals in research and testing and assists in the review and preparation of comments on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) High Production Volume Chemical Challenge Program (HPV), and other related federal programs and initiatives, such as the EPA’s pesticide Registration Review evaluation program. In 2006, Ms. Sullivan was nominated to serve as the Animal Protection representative on the EPA’s Pesticide Program Dialog Committee, a public advisory committee that advises the EPA on pesticide issues.

Ms. Sullivan coordinates PCRM’s efforts as Secretariat of the International Council on Animal Protection in OECD Programmes (ICAPO), a nongovernmental coalition of international animal protection organizations that advocate for policies that will reduce the number of animals used in chemical tests and eliminate tests that have non-animal alternatives for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Devel­opment (OECD).

In addition to coordinating ICAPO’s activities at OECD, Ms. Sullivan serves on a number of committees and expert groups related to specific animal testing issues, such as the Acute Inhalation ad hoc Expert Group. Ms. Sullivan has also played a major role in PCRM’s efforts to test grilled meat samples for heterocyclic amines (HCAs), cancer-causing agents found in meat cooked at high temperatures.

Ms. Sullivan attends national and international conferences and has presented her work on HCAs at the International Congress of Toxicology in Montreal and her work on alternatives to using animals in toxicity tests at the 6th World Congress for Alternatives and Animals in Research in Tokyo.

Ms. Sullivan received her Master of Public Health in Toxicology in 2003 from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. With an inter-depart­mental concentration in Public Health Genetics, Ms. Sullivan’s studies included envi­ronmental health exposure and risk assessment, pharmacology, carcinogenesis and environmental diseases, and pathology. Ms. Sullivan received her bachelor’s degree in anthropology-zoology in 2001 from the University of Michigan. She received the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Senior Research grant for her senior honors thesis research.

Before joining PCRM, Ms. Sullivan worked in the laboratories at the University of Michigan Occupational Safety and Environmental Health En­vironmental Laboratory. She also interned with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she was part of a research team conducting the Staten Island Lung Cancer Research Project.
