About this Internship Opportunity

The Physicians Committee’s Research and Regulatory Affairs team is composed of experts in human-relevant research, education, and testing methods. We collaborate with regulatory, industrial, and academic scientists to develop, assess, and promote alternatives to the use of animals in science. We engage decision-makers in government and industry to make change.

The Nonanimal Research Advocacy Intern will assist the Research and Regulatory Affairs team with developing resources to help advance the field of nonanimal methods of research and testing. Learning opportunities may include:

• Supporting the growth and development of the Early-Career Researchers Advancing 21st-Century Science program.
• Developing a database of academic laboratories in North America using nonanimal, New Approach Methodologies (NAMs).
• Assisting with planning for the Summer Immersion on Innovative Approaches in Science, including program development and promotion. If interested, the intern will be provided with travel funds for attending the program in the summer of 2024.
• Establishing a catalog of student groups and graduate organizations to invite to apply to the Summer Immersion program.

Interns located in Washington, D.C., may also have the opportunity to participate in in-person activities and events. All interns will receive an orientation at the start of their internship and ongoing support from their staff mentor. 

Who We Are Looking For

Applicants should currently be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate level studies in the fields of the life sciences, public health, or toxicology. Applicants should also have:

• A strong interest in the field of nonanimal methods of research and testing
• Excellent research, writing, presentation, and problem-solving skills
• The ability to work independently

Terms:

This is a part-time, semester-long, remote internship. This unpaid volunteer internship is not available as employment. The ideal candidate will be able to intern 15-20 hours a week and commit at least three months to the internship. The ideal start date will be around Jan. 15, 2024, but is flexible. The Physicians Committee will assist interns in obtaining course credit if applicable. 

The Physicians Committee can only accept applications from candidates who will be living in and working from the following jurisdictions at the time of the internship: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, DC, West Virginia, and Virginia.
