Dr. Hewins graduated medical school from the University of Alberta in 1989 and completed a rotating internship and a year of internal medicine at Dalhousie University. He practiced as a family physician for seven years in Berwick, Nova Scotia, and in 1999 returned to Halifax for a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery. He then did a one-year fellowship in upper extremity surgery at the Hand and Upper Limb Center in London, Ontario, part of the University of Western Ontario, and finished in the summer of 2005. From 2005 until present, he has practiced as an orthopedic surgeon in Kentville, Nova Scotia. He is a general orthopedic surgeon with an interest and subspecialty training in upper extremity surgery. He has practiced and recommended a plant-based lifestyle for almost two years.
