President Trump: Athletes Thrive on Beans, Not Big Macs

by President - Neal Barnard, MD, FACC

President Trump’s cholesterol-packed buffet for the Clemson Tigers at the White House featured an artery-clogging line-up from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, and Domino’s.

The President is apparently unaware that more and more athletes, from the NFL’s Tennessee Titans to Venus Williams, who is currently advancing in the Australian Open, are turning to the power of plants.

A scientific review my colleagues and I published in the journal Nutrients last week found that meat, cheese, and other animal products lead to increased body fat, clogged arteries, oxidative stress, and inflammation, which all diminish athletic performance. In fact, one of the studies we looked at found that just one high-fat meal from McDonald’s could have an immediate negative impact.

But the review found that a plant-based—rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes—improves athletic performance and recovery by increasing blood flow and tissue oxygenation and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.
