Human-Based Research for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Needed

A new scientific commentary by Physicians Committee medical research specialist Sarah E. Cavanaugh, Ph.D., emphasizes the need for a shift in priorities in the field of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) research. The commentary summarizes the pitfalls of commonly used animal models of FASD and the ways in which current research efforts have failed to produce medical benefits for individuals with FASD. Finally, Dr. Cavanaugh highlights promising areas of human-based research and offers suggestions for strategies that may help reduce the occurrence of FASD.
