Novel Human Tissue Model Enhances Understanding of Inflammatory Skin Disease

Study in a Sentence: Researchers used tissue samples from patients with an inflammatory skin disease called hidradenitis suppurativa to gain insights into inflammation patterns before and after drug exposure.

Healthy for Humans: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, painful skin disease, often leading to skin lesions and scarring, that affects approximately 1 in 100 people globally. Despite its prevalence, effective treatment options remain limited. This innovative tissue model using patient-derived samples enables researchers to study the effects of drug treatments on inflammation, offering new insights into therapeutic responses.

Redefining Research: There is currently a significant gap in preclinical models that accurately reflect the complex human biology of hidradenitis suppurativa, in part due to ineffective animal experiments. Researchers developed a standardized, physiologically relevant model to maximize its potential for studying disease mechanisms and evaluating potential therapies, marking a critical advancement over existing models.
