Neal Barnard, M.D., F.A.C.C., Delivers Keynote Address at Mad City Vegan Fest on June 17

Madison’s Annual Vegan Festival Provides Inspiring Speakers, Free Food Samples, and an Inclusive, Welcoming Environment

WASHINGTON—The cheese state extends a warm welcome to Mad City Vegan Fest keynote speaker Neal Barnard, M.D., F.A.C.C., president and founder of the nonprofit Physicians Committee, who will dish out tips on Saturday, June 17 about how to break the ‘cheese habit’ and segue into a nutrient-packed, plant-based vegan diet.

Dr. Barnard will sign copies of his new book, The Cheese Trap, which profiles Aaron Rodgers’ transition to a dairy-free diet and the science behind one of the hottest trends in the NFL, Hollywood, and in the medical field.

“It is fun to explore plant-based foods and all the health benefits they bring: easy weight loss, better energy, much better health," says Dr. Barnard.

In Dr. Barnard’s clinical research studies, he finds a whole-food, plant-based vegan diet helps boost metabolism, lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar, and, based on self-reporting, improves chronic pain and alleviates symptoms of anxiety, depression, and fatigue.

Researchers with the University of Oxford predict a global shift to a plant-based diet could save 8.1 million lives and cut $1 billion in health care costs, each year, using global population projections for 2050, and reduce food-based emissions by 70 percent.

Mad City Vegan Fest started in 2011 and has nearly tripled in size over seven years.
