U.S. Vegan Documentary Forks Over Knives Premieres in Mumbai
Doctors Organization Shows Film for World Diabetes Day
MUMBAI—Forks Over Knives, a groundbreaking documentary that illustrates the power of plant-based diets to improve health and prevent diseases like type 2 diabetes, will have its premiere screening in Mumbai on Nov. 18. The Physicians Committee—a U.S. doctors organization—is hosting the screening in observance of World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14.
In Mumbai, 9.3 percent of the population suffers from diabetes, according to a recent study. The World Health Organization says that 69.2 million people in India are affected by diabetes and 71 million are thought to be prediabetic. According to a study in the journal The Lancet, the prevalence of diabetes in India more than doubled for men and increased by 80 percent among women between 1980 and 2014. By 2030 diabetes may afflict up to 100 million individuals in India. The direct annual cost of diabetes in India is $73 billion.
“Forks Over Knives will show the audience how keeping meat and dairy products out of the traditional Indian diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes can prevent and reverse diabetes,” says the Physicians Committee’s Zeeshan Ali, Ph.D., who will host the events. “It’s already helped viewers worldwide save their lives with a plant-based diet.”
The event will begin with light refreshments. Following the screening, Dr. Ali will host a Q-and-A with professor Vijay Joshi from Pune, who reversed his diabetes with a vegan diet and has been free of symptoms for the past eight years.
“In 2009, after reading an interview with Physicians Committee president Neal Barnard, M.D., I gave up milk and started a vegan diet,” says Joshi. “I lost 14 pounds in a year, and my doctor eventually took me off three diabetes and cholesterol medications.”
