Alcohol Increases Risk for Cardiovascular Disease
Alcohol consumption increases risk factors for heart disease, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers tracked alcohol intake for 3,869 participants and monitored arterial stiffness, a risk factor for heart disease. Participants with the highest alcohol consumption per week had harder arteries when compared to those with the lowest alcohol intake. The authors suggest more research is needed to determine if reduction or abstention from drinking may reduce the risk for heart disease.
