Avoiding Animal Products is ALWAYS a Good Step
A new analysis published by the Physicians Committee found that when participants replaced animal products with plant-based foods, they lost weight regardless of whether these were so-called healthful or unhealthful plant-based foods according to the plant-based diet index (PDI).1 While it is a good idea to replace animal products with plant-based foods, the Physicians Committee has noted several limitations of this scoring system, including that it is misrepresentative by name, due to examining presence of specific foods that are part of omnivorous diets rather than a fully vegan diet, and it has some questionable allocations, such as including vegetable oils in the "healthful" category.
