Diverse Gut Microbiomes Help Prevent Infection
The gut microbiome is important for overall health, and a new study helps explain how it helps fight infection. Using a series of experiments, researchers concluded that a diverse range of bacteria are able to work together to consume all of the nutrients that disease-causing bacteria would need to grow.1 This colonization resistance has health benefits and may be best achieved by following a high-fiber, plant-based diet.2
