High Triglyceride Levels Increase Risk for Hypothyroidism

High triglyceride levels may increase your risk for thyroid conditions, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Researchers monitored triglyceride levels and hypothyroid incidence rates for 24,100 participants from three Chinese communities as part of the Risk Evaluation of Cancers in Chinese Diabetic Individuals study. Those with high triglyceride levels experienced a 35 percent increased risk for hypothyroidism. That risk rose as much as twofold when serum triglyceride levels were above 1.99 mmol/L. Because elevated triglyceride levels are often associated with poor dietary choices, this study demonstrates a potential mode for the prevention of hypothyroidism.
