Overweight and obesity affects the majority of the U.S. taking a disproportionate toll on under-served populations. Many researchers have found that income level and socio-economic status are linked to health disparities including increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. However, improved lifestyle choices, especially dietary, need not be reserved for those in a particular income, social, gender, or racial demographic.
Those struggling to make ends meet can eat healthfully on foods that can be less expensive than diets fueled by seemingly inexpensive processed or fast-food products. The savings can happen in the short term and certainly in the long term, measured not only by dollars spent on food, but also the savings from lower medical costs and higher quality of life.
Discover the relationship between diet and disease as well as the power of healthful foods to defend against certain diseases and help the body heal from illness. Learn how to break unhealthful dietary patterns and make good food choices. Get tips on how to plan a weekly or monthly menu to get the most out of a limited budget while meeting optimal nutritional needs. Understand the nutrient density of various foods to stock your kitchen with health promoting foods. In our classes, attendees do all of this while enjoying a cooking demonstration and tasting delicious, healthful dishes in a supportive group setting.
