First Mandatory Plant-Based Nutrition Curriculum for Medical Students

A mandatory plant-based nutrition curriculum at Wayne State University School of Medicine educated medical students and clinicians on treating diet-related disease, as described in the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention. The curriculum, titled Rooting for Wellness, consisted of nutrition education panels, cooking demonstrations, guest lectures, journal clubs, and a vegan kickstart program. These programs were designed to expose students to clinical applications of plant-based nutrition. The commentary provides advice and recommendations for programming and resources, including the Physicians Committee’s Nutrition Guide for Clinicians reference manual and lunch and learn opportunities, to implement similar programming in other medical school curricula.
